ABOUT AMIC


Asian Mass Communication Research & Information Centre (AMIC) is a major resource for communicators in the Asia-Pacific. Established in 1971 with the support of the Government of Singapore and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, it is dedicated to the mass communication development in the Asia Pacific region. AMIC is actively engaged in mass communication documentation, research, training, publishing and press development.




AMIC DOCUMENTATION PROGRAMME
AMIC Library contains one of Asia's largest collections of documents and audio-visual materials in the region including more than 13,000 volumes of books, periodicals and conference papers, and an audio-visual collection comprising slides, films, video and audio tapes. A significant resource is the library's collection of unpublished materials gathered over a period of more than 20 years, making it one of the most extensive collections of fugitive materials. The AMIC library also houses the Japan Prize Collection of educational broadcasting material.

AMICNET, an on-line retrieval system which is open to subscription, facilitates access to documentation services in the AMIC library and 10 Asian countries.



AMIC PUBLISHING PROGRAMME
This programme identifies information and publication needs of AMIC's constituents and recommends support for appropriate publication projects. AMIC disseminates information on communication through its bimonthly newsletter, a quarterly magazine, occasional papers, monographs and books. It also helps to provide a forum for exchange of views and opinions among communication scholars and practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region.



AMIC RESEARCH PROGRAMME
As a research centre, AMIC initiates and organises research projects, training programmes and a research publication. It encourages the development of institutional capabilities to conduct appropriate research programmes through networking, exchange of research fellows and joint research activities. It also enhances the capabilities and resources of communication research institutions in the region.

Jointly with the School of Mass Communication, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, the research unit edits a biannual research journal - The Asian Journal of Communication.



AMIC TRAINING PROGRAMME
AMIC assesses the human and material resource needs of institutions in the Asia-Pacific and recommends support for appropriate projects. It organises workshops, seminars, conferences and other meetings to help communication institutions meet their human resource development requirements. In addition, AMIC also coordinates consultancy activities aim at helping these institutions to develop their capabilities and resources.



AMIC PRESS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
This programme aims to aid the development and sustained growth of the print media. Jointly with IFRA, it focuses on the technical aspects of newspaper production through consultancy services, workshops and training activities.
